To quote Headquarters Dispensary of Longmont, Colorado, “Big things begin simply.” Over the past two years, I’ve witnessed the simple beginnings of legal cannabis. I’ve also witnessed its expansion into many facets of my life in Colorado. As many of you know, cannabis-centered events are a passion of mine. Through Edible Events Company, I’ve developed and executed scores of experiential cannabis events, including a series of fundraisers for the Colorado Symphony at Red Rocks, the Mile High Birthday Bash, countless Art Gallery Openings, and 15 national Women Grow events and counting. Entertaining with cannabis is both an art and a…

Facelift for the Cannabis Consumer

rollingstone,janewest,pothead,womengrow,sethrogan,thejanewest,cannabis,

Over a decadent lunch at Bar Primi in the Bowery, Leslie Pariseau and I animatedly discussed her upcoming Rolling Stone piece. We went back and forth listing men who fit the on-screen pothead stereotype and laughed at how outdated it has become. For many women, cannabis is not about getting “stoned.” Cannabis is about relaxing, feeling a buzz, and taking a short vacation from ourselves. It gives us a moment to escape the daily pressures. Female cannabis users are mothers of all ages, daughters, sisters, artists, and working professionals that understand moderation and pleasure. If Seth Rogan turned his camera to my…

“You never really see problems from people who are high from marijuana, but you do see problems from people who are high from alcohol.” —Tom Coohill, Coohills Restaurant Owner. Denver marked another milestone in the history of cannabis legislation. On August 10, 2015, the Campaign for Limited Social Use turned in 10,700+ signatures, which is over twice the requirement needed to qualify to be placed on ballot for the upcoming November 3rd election. The initiative would allow limited social cannabis use at commercial establishments in areas restricted to adults 21 and older, in accordance with the clean air act. This…

Opportunities in the cannabis industry continue to grow and Women Grow members are once again at the forefront. Lobbying, Learning & Laughs

Jane West and Jazmin Hupp Lobbying in Washington DC

Washington DC was a whirlwind this week with so many important cannabis industry events occurring back to back. The week kicked off with both the National Cannabis Industry Association and the Marijuana Policy Project’s Annual Lobby Days. This brought an excellent group of business owners and advocates to our nation’s capital to meet with their state representatives and discuss the issues currently facing the industry and work to resolve the ever-present banking issues caused by 280E. What made 2015 lobby days so special for Marijuana Policy Project is their 20th Anniversary Gala event. Twenty years is like precambrian era (PreKampian more…

Who Is Jane West?

I became Jane West to prove that I could change my life in a monumental way. I realized that I was the person holding me back from seeking out the bigger and better that I knew was out there for me. I needed to take a leap, and I did it, head first. You can start over tomorrow.  You can drastically change the parts of your life that need changing, and the things that don’t will reshape themselves to fit the curves of the new pieces of you. And the best part of becoming the true you is that then you…

This piece was amusing to write. Women Grow posted it the morning of April Fools (even made up the little MJ logo mirroring the AMA). Every statistic about opioids contained in the article is true, read on… APA Adopts New Medical Marijuana Policies to Curb America’s Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic

My First 15 Minutes

NBC Nightly News Features Jane West

One year ago today at 5:00 PM EST marks the anniversary of the premiere of Marijuana in America. I woke up on February 26th, 2014 in a hotel bed in Tysons Corner, VA, on the last day of a work trip to company headquarters.  The purpose of the trip was to debrief 2013 and plan for the summer, my 9th year with the company. Normally I take every peaceful kid-free hotel room morning to stay cozy, but that morning I got up extra early and got into my cold rental car for a drizzly drive to a diner in Bethesda…

Stop Public Shaming of Parents

Denver Post

In this OpEd contribution I wrote for The Denver Post, the parents we are protecting are law-abiding citizens of Colorado that choose cannabis as a part of their personal health treatment plan for PTSD, chronic pain or anxiety. They are among the millions of overwhelmed moms taking antidepressants but looking for a better alternative. They may be picking up cannabis for a loved one suffering from nausea associated with chemotherapy. A parent or grandparent may need relief during hospice care. A CBD tincture may control their child’s debilitating epilepsy. And some of the parents shopping at the Aurora pot shop…

Subtle Sexism & the ‘Rebranding of Pot’

cannabrand

Last week, the New York Times ran an article entitled The Rebranding of Pot Inc., documenting the ways that the booming cannabis sector is changing the way it communicates with women. The Denver Post’s cannabis industry publication, The Cannabist, published an article documenting how the ad agency featured in the New York Times, Cannabrand, lost a client because they were quoted saying they were trying to “weed out the stoners.” Agencies gain and lose clients everyday. This is not news, and is certainly not a controversy. The Cannabist followed up on this “news” with opinion response in which Neil Pollack…
